Here I think you mean "driver" as a piece of the Sane layer, 
specificially dedicated to a specific scanner (family),
not as a piece of the kernel or a kernel module. Right ?

I think that it is my last problem.
What is the oldest kernel version that can be used efficiently
with an USB scanner module such as the EPSON 1250 and the SANE-1.0.7
backend ?

I failed to use it with a 2.2.17-21mdk kernel which is good enough
for my USB HP printer.

I can quite easily get a 2.4.17 kernel. Is it sufficient ?
Or must I download a 2.4.18 kernel ?
