I've used both here Gerhard, currently running 2.4.18.  What I 
did to build 2.4.18 was to make the -rc4 version, but change the 
Makefile and so on to call it 2.4.18.  This is because the real 
2.4.18 is hopelessly foobared as it was made on the wrong tree 
and doesn't have much of the 2.4.18 stuff actually in it.  I 
certainly hope we get away from all this branching so we have a 
clean base 2.4.19 release that all the patches will fit on for 
2.4.20.  This is a drag, not to belittle Marcelo's work, but he 
needs a cross-checker/supervisor to make sure this doesn't happen 
again.
