IIRC no. There is a white strip (approx 1cm wide), then a small gap
(.5 cm or so) where the scanner can "look through" to the plastic
case, and then comes the real scan area.

Hmm - I think the Epson driver only switches it off for a moment (less
than half a second), after the warmup period but it moves the sensor
before. Maybe it puts it over the gap I mentioned before, so that the
remaining light of the lamp doesn't matter.
BTW, I still haven't found time to give it another try, and probably
won't find any for the rest of August.
But my wife will be in Ulm for a weekend in September or October (I
don't remember the exact date). This could be an opportunity to
finally visit you, Gerhard. :)
