I have the same scanner and the same symptoms you describe here (see 
also my previous post). For me the reason for such behaviour was 
the load on my system. When no other process steals CPU-cycles every-
thing is fine. But even moving the mouse-pointer between two windows 
causes artefacts in the scanned image. The problem gets worse with 
higher resolution, since more data has to be transferred from the 
scanner. I never verified it, but since a grayscaled image causes 
much less data than a color scan, this might be very robust against
the load problem.   

Since my last post no one from the list neither myself found 
a solution to this problem :(
