Hello,
I hope this is the write address to send this type of a question. If
not, please let me know where I should direct this question.

I am trying to get my Canon CanoScan N650U (USB) scanner to work on
Mandrake Linux 9.0. I have the SANE 1.0.8 and XSane 0.87 installed. I
downloaded and uncompressed the file from Plustek called
plustek-module-0_42_9.tar.gz. I put the file contents into the
/etc/sane.d/ folder because I could not find a sane-backend folder like
the documentation said there should be and I figured that I must be
using sane.d as my backend folder. I was able to do a make all and make
install but when I do a make load I get the following message:

[root@laptop plustek_driver]# make load
/sbin/modprobe pt_drv || exit 1
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/misc/pt_drv.o: init_module: Success
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
modprobe: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdk/misc/pt_drv.o failed
modprobe: insmod pt_drv failed
make: *** [load] Error 1

I checked the dmesg after that and here is the last little bit of it:

hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/2/1, assigned device number 6
usb.c: USB device 6 (vend/prod 0x4a9/0x2206) is not claimed by any
active driver.
devfs_mk_dir(scanner): using old entry in dir: c12cd5c0 ""
pt_drv : driver version 0.42-10
pt_drv : no device(s) detected, (-9020)
devfs_mk_dir(scanner): using old entry in dir: c12cd5c0 ""
pt_drv : driver version 0.42-10
pt_drv : no device(s) detected, (-9023)
devfs_mk_dir(scanner): using old entry in dir: c12cd5c0 ""
pt_drv : driver version 0.42-10

From what I can tell it seem to be detecting my scanner okay as when I
plug it in or unplug it there are entries in this log that show it is
being detected and assigned a device number.

Here is my /etc/modules.conf file :

probeall scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
probeall usb-interface usb-uhci
alias eth0 8139too
alias sound-slot-0 i810_audio
alias char-major-40 pt_drv
pre-install pt_drv modprobe -k parport
options scanner vendor=0x04a9 device=0x2206
options pt_drv lampoff=180 warmup=15 port=0x1ca0 lOffonEnd=0 mov=0 slowIO=1

And my /etc/sane.d/plustek.conf file (with comments removed):

[usb] 0x04a9 0x2206

option lampOff 0
option warmup 30
option lOffOnEnd 0
option posOffX 0
option posOffY 0
option tpaOffX 0
option tpaOffY 0
option negOffX 0
option negOffY 0
option redGamma 1.0
option greenGamma 1.0
option blueGamma 1.0
option grayGamma 1.0

device /dev/scanner
