Hi, 

the problem is the Mandrake stuff, they have removed all backends
from the SANE configuration file dll.conf.
Search for this file, it should be loacted at:
/etc/sane.d
or
/usr/local/etc/sane.d
(Try: locate dll.conf)
Once found, check at least for the plustek entry, if there's a leading #
remove it...)

This should do the trick
