Maybe you alter your /etc/conf.modules file (or /etc/modules.conf) and
add
the suggestet stuff (see INSTALL file).
This will normally cause the driver to load, when you call scanimage
the first time.
The other possibilite is to do a modprobe pt_drv in the
/etc/rc.d/boot.local
file (here are some differences in the different distributions, you
know I
have a SuSE, but Mandrak should also offer such a file).
So the driver will be loaded during startup...
