The good news:
Victory! all is well with the world - Setting the parallel port to SPP mode in
the BIOS solved the problem. The scanner is now detected as a bog standard
4800 and seems to work.
The bad news:
Black and white only. Colour scanning with (x)scanimage gives out of sync
images with misregistration of the primary colours. (sigh) not sure if this is
a driver or scanner problem.....
