Thank you it has indeed solved the problem. I am kicking myself - I did try
all the settings for mov (0-4) in /etc/conf.modules but I guess I must have
forgotten to unload the driver when I tried mov=2 (sigh)

Thanks - have eliminated most banding by making scanning the sole task - have
to stop my distributed.net client or band galore!
