Hi Johannes,

there are currently few experiences with Kernel 2.4, but I can imagine,
that the parport code which looks for IEEE1284 compatible devices
may cause the 9630 ASIC to go to an undefined state.

You might try and load the parport stuff manually. Your scanner
shouldn't
be attached during this action. After that, plug in the scanner and try
to load
the driver.
