I actually got things working with the 0.36.38 version, but will try
moving up to a later version once I upgrade my SANE.
The change was to recompile the kernel with the IEEE 1284 autodetection
disabled. I saw a note about this while combing the list archives, and
it worked for me too.
Best of all, the scanner is working perfectly under Linux, though the
Windows driver gives really crappy looking images (looks like the
red/green channels are being swapped somehow).
