Dear Gerhard,

Very many thanks for your advice so far. I'm still suffering from a number
of problems with getting sane + plustek driver to work properly. I've
encountered just about every problem in the mailing list archives - I
guess I'm just unlucky or stupid or both. Some have resolved themselves.
Some not. Here are my remaining difficulties:

Current setup:

Mandrake 7.0
Plustek Optic Pro 9636P scanner
Sane 1.0.1 with plustek-sane-0_36_18

(1) If I try scanning with xscanimage my scanner usually makes a nasty
horrible whirring noise and needs to have its plug pulled fairly rapidly.
I've seen this referred to in previous messages without any apparent
solution.

(2) I can only get the parport modules to load properly by doing it
manually with 'modprobe' after I boot up my system. My etc/conf.modules
file looks like:
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
pre-install plip modprobe parport_pc ; echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irq
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias char-major-40 pt_drv
post-install pt_drv modprobe -k parport
options pt_drv lampoff=180 warmup=15 port=0x378 lOffonEnd=0 mov=0
but my system doesn't seem to like it.

(3) I know how to stick new plug-ins into Gimp (1.0.4) and yet I can't get
the Aquire stuff which interfaces to xscanimage to appear in the menu.
After some investigation, it appears that the following is the problem:

/home/me/.gimp/plug-ins/xscanimage: GIMP support missing.
wire_read: unexpected EOF (plug-in crashed?)

If I add a '-lgimp' after the GIMP_LIBS = flag in the Makefile which
compiles xscanimage it says:

/usr/lib/libgimp.so: undefined reference to `PLUG_IN_INFO'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

Sigh. I appreciate this is not a plustek problem, but does anybody know
how to compile xscanimage with GIMP support?

I guess that's enough to be going on with. I would be immensely grateful
to anyone who can offer help with any of the above (before I commit some
serious violence in front of my poor pet cat who has had to put up with a
lot of swearing and teeth grinding over the last few days!!)

Best wishes,
Mike
