Hi,
the problem is, that the currently available driver needs
a National Semiconductor Chipset called LM9831, LM9832 or LM9833.
Excatly these chips are supported, and they work in some but not all
UT12 devices. Plustek has produced other scanners called UT12
(especially older ones) with a Grandtech Chipset (I think it's GT 680-1 or
so). This means, you should have a look for backends that will support this
chipset. I think, that the Plustek backend will never support the Grandtech
Chipset - too much work and no test-device :-( Sorry...
