Hi,

Does anybody know of a linux based editor that supports syntax
highlighting for PIC BASIC Pro ?

Kind regards

As I remember vim 'does colours' and there are data-files for each
different 'dialect'.

What I really think would be a killer-app [for me] is a syntax editor;
like spread-sheet-menus. If at a certain state of the 'syntax-diagram'
there are only 3 valid choices, why have the user type in from an
[near] infinite sequence of keys. When you enter an escalator/lift
which has 5 valid destinations you select from 1-of-5 [don't nit-pik
in correcting this]. You don't write a message to the controller.

My theory is that people want to pretend there's in 'little man in the
box', who can read human languages - why else do they write "please"
with instructions/prompts ? And why do they like writing 'little messages'
[which was the only possibility in TTY days] instead of using eg. mc [the
good clone of the brilliant original DOS nc] for all file operations ?

eg. [using pascal-like syntax], why should you have to select a "R",
select an "E", select a "P'...; when you can select a "REPEAT".
Or better still, since it is not open to choice, select a:
"REPEAT" <space for block> "UNTIL".

Can http://www.nedit.org do any thing like the above.

I've never used vim ;-) With nedit, you select
Preferences->Syntax Highlighting->Text Drawing Style
You can have different highlighting for different languages. It's very
configurable. Configuration is stored in ~/.nedit, you don't need data files
for each language.

Don't know--I've not had the need to do any of those things. As with any
tool, one's choice of editor depends on one's needs. Nedit fits my needs as a
programmer better than any other Linux editor I've found. Those who have
different needs may not like it at all. Try it, you might like it, but --Read
The Docs-- first :-)

You're hearking back to various "embedded BASIC" machines such as the
ZX-80 (I/m sure I still have a couple of them here ...) on which all the
available functions were mapped to alphabetic keys - in fact, this
mapped the token values used to store those functions in the code,
directly as well.

The Commodore 64/ 16/ +4 was similar, but not so direct, and a couple
of others.

And yes, there's no particular reason why you cannot *emulate* this
with an editor.
