I've used the PG2C almost exclusively since I started pic programming about
a year ago. It works very well with the PiKdev programmer but I've never
used picprog. Isn't picprog a parallel port programmer?

I have been using the PG2C for 4-5 Months now. It works fine with
picprog 1.7 but not with the latest, 1.8, release. I have had no
problems with it.

Has to be run by root or sudo. Mice software.

1.8.1 is the latest ;-)

Can you tell which problems you have with 1.8?

I use picprog as a normal user.

Sure. In both the tar.gz and the .deb, it does not communicate with
the PG2C, yet does fine with version 1.7, same cable and computer.

I wrote to the author and tried a number of his suggestions but found
nothing that corrected the non-communication problem.

As 1.7 works OK, I hope that more reports about the picprog-1.8/PG2C
combination might help in finding if the problem is here or with the
new version.

Did you do anything special to get the PG2C working with pikdev?

I tried all of the JDM options and can't get to to communicate.

Strange, I know someone[1] who makes use of a Olimex PG1 with
picprog-1.8 without a problem. And the schematic of a PG1 and PG2[2] is
not very different. Oh well, the strange world of bits and bytes ;-)

I don't recall doing anything "special". Here are my settings on the
Programmer configuration panel:
Serial /dev/ttyS1
Vpp pin3
Vdd pin5
Clock pin7
Data in pin8
Data out pin4
Data R/W pin5
Clock delay 20

That's it...no inverted options checked, etc... I think these correspond to
selecting JDM Class (delay 20) from the drop down.

Make sure you've selected the proper serial port. Oh, and the other thing I
found I had to do was chmod 777 /dev/ttyS1 as root to give normal users
write privileges to the serial port.

Hope this helps.

John
