	I wish that was so.  Thank you for your patience.  I installed
all things popt which turned out to be pop-dev and libpopt0.  the
dselect package handler does not find anything else with popt in it's
name.  The compilation is line for line the same as before.  It takes
about 25 minutes and looks like it is within a couple of directories
of being finished.

	What I have been doing just to be safe is completely blowing
away the source directory, un-tarring from the snapshot source and
doing ./configure -quiet --disable-gui on an un-touched source to
eliminate any possibility of other factors creeping in.  The deletion
of the source directory takes about 1 second and the un-tarring from
the snapshot archive is so fast as to be almost instantaneous.
