After looking at the config.log this last time, I see the
beginning of trouble:

configure:14403: checking whether stripping libraries is possible
configure:14408: result: yes
configure:21695: checking for main in -lpopt
configure:21719: g++ -o conftest -g -O2   conftest.cc -lpopt   >&5
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lpopt
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
configure:21725: $? = 1
configure: failed program was:
| /* confdefs.h. */
|
| #define PACKAGE_NAME "gpsim"
| #define PACKAGE_TARNAME "gpsim"
| #define PACKAGE_VERSION "0.21.12snap"

The system did lack popt-dev as a previous poster suggested.
I installed those libraries via dselect which went normally, and
nothing exists on this system with the names shown in the error
message. Any ideas as to what happened or what else I need to do to
get these files? At least the configure phase only takes a few
seconds so I'll know quickly when something has changed.

	As always, my thanks.
