Well, I have run out of things to try. I found out that, at
least in Debian, the linking libraries have names like libc6 and
libc6-dev which deal with exactly the problem I am having, but they
are both already here.
I am truly stuck for now although everything else relating to
PIC's and PIC programming appear to be ready to use.
I did compare this system with a second Debian sarge system
and nothing seems to be missing so far.
If I find out anything else to try and it by chance works, I
will certainly let the list know, but I am out of anything else to try.
Thanks to Scott and everybody else for your suggestions. If
there is another library to load, the name doesn't look like anything
obvious. One linker library has an alt designation in its name and
the documentation says it is for getting very old programs to link.
There is even a libc6-pic, but the pic part of the name is
nothing to do with peripheral interface controllers. It is a subset
of library routines for people building boot floppies. I just thought
the name kind of funny due to what we are about in this list.
